Bretazenil or Ro16-6028 is an anxiolytic drug of the benzodiazepine class and is an imidazopyrrolobenzodiazepine highly potent GABA receptor antagonist. It acts as a partial agonist with minimal side effects, is a partial agonist and binds to the α1, α2, α3, α4, α5 and α6 subunits of the GABA receptor.
Bretazenil produces a sedative-hypnotic effect, 0.5 mg of bretazenil is equivalent to 10 mg of diazepam.
Bretazenil has less potential for abuse and is used in the treatment of epilepsy, insomnia, anxiety.
